Join the Mount Shasta Bioregional Ecology Center for a day of celebrating the biodiversity of Sáttítla Highlands National Monument. We’ll become citizen scientists, testing the quality of the water for pH, turbidity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen; cataloguing riparian plants, animals and mushrooms; and collecting and identifying macroinvertebrates in the water before releasing them back to their homes! We’ll spend some time exploring with our senses and hopefully have time for a swim and nature journaling! All ages are welcome to this free event! Carpooling and caravaning from McCloud available. Please register for more information

Additional Event Details

During our stops, we will walk short distances, mostly on uneven ground, so please wear sturdy hiking shoes. To get our excursion started at 10:00 a.m., we will meet at the Chevron gas station in McCloud at 8:30 a.m. The address for the gas station is: 117 Squaw Valley Rd, McCloud, CA 96057.

More info:

  • Snacks and drinks provided - bring lunch and a water bottle for each person in your group. There will be places to refill your water bottle along the way.

  • Wear weather-appropriate clothing & hiking-style shoes. It looks like it’ll be a warm day. Some areas don’t provide shade; consider a hat and sun shirt. However, with higher elevations, when in the shade, it becomes cool. Layers suggested.

  • There is no cell service! Following proper caravanning protocol will be important to ensuring everyone’s safety.

  • To participate in the bioblitz, you will need to have a smartphone that is charged, and one or more of the following free apps: iNaturalist, Seek, and/or eBird. Please download the app(s) beforehand and create an account. We will not have service at the event to do this.

  • Please bring a notebook and pencil or pen for nature journaling. Bring a favorite field guide if you’d like!

  • There are no fuel options past McCloud. Please be sure to have a full tank when we depart.

  • All stops will have bathroom facilities.

Minors will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
